First Ever Open Source Social Network Platform

  • MIT License, Social

With new social networks launching everyday most start with the same basic features. Bloggers have WordPress, Mephisto, Typo and other open source solutions. Yet there isn’t an open source social network platform, until now. LovdByLess is an open source social network platform which is built with Ruby on Rails, this open source project has all the basic features you will need to setup a basic social network.

You can follow a user, mutual following is friending. User-to-User Messaging, User Profile, Comments, Photo Gallery with Captions, Friends Search, Flickr and YouTube Integration as well. If you are going to build a social networking web application, LovdByLess is a really good platform to start with. However, you need to install Ruby on Rails first apparent.

P.S. Thank you Evan pointed out that barnraiser.org is actually the first one of open source social software, that’s been around for a couple years now.

Sorry. Not the first OSS social networking app by any stretch of the imagination. See barnraiser.org for social software that’s been around for a couple years now.

Just because something is assembled in Rails doesn’t mean it has innovation baked in by fiat.

    @ Evan

Thank you for pointing this out. I have edited the post immediately. :)

Hey Ray, we’re excited about this project and looking for other rails developers to help expand the basic functionality. I think we’ve received alot of attention due to our UI being better than most open source projects.

There’s also PeopleAggregator: http://update.peopleaggregator.org/, which has been around since 2005.

    HI,

    You’ve got Elgg too.
    http://elgg.org/

    From their site:
“Elgg is an open source social platform based around choice, flexibility and openness: a system that firmly places individuals at the centre of their activities.
Your users have the freedom to incorporate all their favorite tools within one environment and showcase their content with as many or as few people as they choose, all within a social networking site that you control.”

  • http://www.yproxy.com Marcus

Ning.com is NOT open source. It’s a hosted solution, and they run ads on your page unless you pay for the premium service.

  • http://www.jamzee.com Randy

I am using lovdbyless as my social framework for my website and I love it.

If you are interested, I build an application that allows you to create playlists from YouTube videos, that you can import into myspace, facebook or your iPod.

thanks for sharing … I have used elgg b4

  • http://www.serveandshare.com/networks networks

I have heard so many people say ning is open source. I don’t know where they came up with that from. Most of the social networking scripts out there are junk. For me buddypress with the social networking module has been the best. I created the networks site using it. I would like to find something that is like ning, but there does not seem to be anything close. I guess I will just have to master php and do it myself.
