I run both open source and hosted ecommerce sites there are pluses and minuses for both. I think if you are really serious and looking to invest in a large scale store then Magento really is the only choice these days, it’s list of features really put it over and above the rest. Pity about it’s useability though.

Although it’s not open source, BigCommerce is another platfrom worth looking at as well.

Very good free Ecommerce list. Never try it before, I will build online store for my client using premium platform, but I will try to use free platform first and find out how it perform.

Magento seems to have a lot of features out of the box. But I agree with most of the opinions, what a freaking bear ! files all over the place, steep curve.

One thing that wasn’t said, forget about using jQuery on your site with Magento. Prototype and/or scriptaculous breaks jquery badly. Yes, I have tried using the jquery $var trick, it still blows up.

Have used Zencart previously and found it limiting (at the time). This time when I set the jewellery store, I wanted to use wordpress as the core to the site due to the fact how much google loves wordpress Tried using WP-Ecommerce, but had lots of issues and finally settled on Shopp. Whilst not free, it is only $55 which is almost free
