another tool that supports transparency in favicons is http://tools.dynamicdrive.com/favicon/.
That worked fine for me.

Nice post.
I just can’t believe that PS, or fireworks do not have this built in (plugins only). Good start though.

The only problem with this is, that it doesnt seem to import alpha-transparency, every icon has a white background, even if you upload a gif or png with transparency.One of the tools that supports transparency in favicons is @icon sushi.
