In my opininon in case of Magento there are far more pro´s than con´s. It is true, that the architecture is not that simple, but this is one of the reasons for a lot of other advantages like flexiblity, scalability etc. Magento is like a lot of other software-tools: modern software tends to be full of features and very flexible but also more complex.

@Sayler: There are almost always pro´s and con´s. And you won't find this much power in any free/open source script.Fully Featured - Straight out of the box it does almost everything you could want to do. Everything.Modular Code - Lots of new code to learn. Uses a deep template system that once learned is great. However, its not intuitive by any means.Great for Client - Backend is easy to use AND powerful! Many reports to track how your business is doing.Stable - Haven't found any glitches or bugs. Works like it should even though its just a hatchling in the ecommerce platform realm.Cons:Heavy - Lots of code. Slow load times.Documentation - Sucks. Nevertheless, it is still a new platform and it should get better.Install - Not the easiest to install on your server. Make sure to use your host's error logs and check your files and folders permissions. Magento is picky. In the end, I say the pros greatly outweigh the cons. There is no other solution like this that is free. I recommend it to everyone and my client loves it.

I’ve been following Magento for nearly 6 months now and finally decided to use it for a client’s e-commerce project.

I will say that there are both pros and cons.

Pros:

FREE – Can’t beat that. Magento does have impressive features, but it is incredibly hard to understand & work with. And to make things worse, it has very little documentation & forum support. To be honest, I think they're just out to make money. They aren't doing it out of the true spirit of open source. I wouldn't be surprised if they started charging for the source code because they seem to be charging for everything else. I actually read that they were going to make a "Premium" Magento which will be for sale & released under a commercial license. WHAT A SURPRISE!! It just goes on to show their true intentions.Anyways, overall, Prestashop has my vote right now. It is less complicated to use, has extensive developer & user documentation & community support. It has amazing features that can get the job done & keep your customers and clients coming back. With the new features prestashop has planned for the near future, it's a matter of time before it trumps magento. If you enjoy working through trial & error, then go with Magento. But if you're like me and you just want an advanced e-commerce solution that's easy to use and understand, save yourself a headache and go with Prestashop. You'll be happy you did.

After hearing about Magento, I decided to check it out and I have to agree with Matt. I rather have less features and more simplicity.

Looks great, front and backend but is extremely hard to use if you want to apply it to the real world e.g. create products with different colours and sizes.

high end features are all there but the basics have been left behind. have it installed for 2 months now and still not gone live because a lot of it is trial and error due to the lack of documentation.

I am still keen on using it but will abandon it soon as it is too much to support for any client.
